Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *-meŕ.

Suffix

ـمز • (-maz, -mez)

  1. (added to verb roots) forms the negative aorist tense
    كورـ (gör-, to see) + ‎ـمز → ‎كورمز (görmez, s/he doesn't see)
  2. (added to verb roots) forms negative present participles
    اینانـ (inan-, to believe) + ‎ـمز → ‎اینانمز (inanmaz, one who doesn't believe)
  3. (added to verb roots) forms negative participial adjectives
    اینانـ (inan-, to believe) + ‎ـمز → ‎اینانمز (inanmaz, incredulous)

Usage notes

  • The final /z/ is dropped in first person conjugation during the later Ottoman period. This phenomenon occurs in the Classical period less frequently.
    • كورمم (görmem, I don't see) instead of Classical كورمزم (görmezim, I don't see)
    • كورمیز (görmeyiz, we don't see) instead of Classical كورمزز (görmeziz, we don't see)
