Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *-meŕ.

Suffix

ـمز • (-maz, -mez)

  1. (added to verb roots) forms the negative aorist tense
    ‎كورـ (gör-, “to see”) + ‎ـمز → ‎كورمز (görmez, “s/he doesn't see”)
  2. (added to verb roots) forms negative present participles
    ‎اینانـ (inan-, “to believe”) + ‎ـمز → ‎اینانمز (inanmaz, “one who doesn't believe”)
  3. (added to verb roots) forms negative participial adjectives
    ‎اینانـ (inan-, “to believe”) + ‎ـمز → ‎اینانمز (inanmaz, “incredulous”)

Usage notes

  • The final /z/ is dropped in first person conjugation during the later Ottoman period. This phenomenon occurs in the Classical period less frequently.
    • كورمم (görmem, “I don't see”) instead of Classical كورمزم (görmezim, “I don't see”)
    • كورمیز (görmeyiz, “we don't see”) instead of Classical كورمزز (görmeziz, “we don't see”)
