Etymology
From Byzantine Greek κοντάριν (kontárin, “pole, spar”), from Ancient Greek κοντάριον (kontárion), diminutive of κοντός (kontós, “spear”). Compare Greek κοντάρι (kontári, “pole, spar; flagpole”).
