Pronunciation

Verb

لَهِثَ • (lahiṯa) I (non-past يَلْهَثُ (yalhaṯu), verbal noun لَهْث (lahṯ) or لُهَاث (luhāṯ))

  1. to pant
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 7:176:
And tell them the story of the one to whom We handed down our Signs, yet he sloughed it off, and the Devil was walking behind him. He was among the tempted.
If We had willed it, We would have raised him high, but he clung to the earth and was chasing his hankerings. His kind is that of a dog: if you set upon it, it pants, and if you leave it, it pants. This is the kind of the people who have disbelieved in our Signs. Tell them those tales, that they may think.
