Arabic

Etymology 1

From the roots م ن ي (m n y) and م ن و (m n w).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ma.nijj/

Noun

مَنِيّ • (maniyym (plural مُنْي (muny))

  1. conceptive fluid or discharge
    Synonym: مَاء (māʔ)
    1. male ejaculation, semen; sperm
      • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 75:37:
        أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِنْ مَنِيٍّ يُمْنَى
ʔalam yaku nuṭfatan min maniyyin yumnā
Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?
    2. (obsolete) female ejaculation
      • 7th century CE, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:
[Then] he [the Jew] said, "I also came to ask you about something no one on earth would know but a Prophet or one or two [other] men." [So] he [the Prophet] said, "Would it benefit you if I answered?" [So] he [the Jew] said, "I shall hear [it] with my [own] ears. I came to ask you about [one's] offspring." [So] he [the Prophet] said, "The fluid of men is white; that of women is yellow. If they combine and the fluid of the man rises above [or overpowers] the woman's, they beget a male if Allah wills it, and if the fluid of the woman rises above [or overpowers] the man's, they beget a female if Allah wills it." [So] the Jew said, "You have spoken truthfully, and you are indeed a prophet." Then he went away and left.
Usage notes

Much older texts usually do not lexically distinguish between male and female ejaculation. Modern texts, on the other hand, tend to reserve مَنِيّ (maniyy) for referring to male ejaculation. See the entry for مَاء (māʔ) for more information.
