Inherited from Proto-Iranian *maič- (“to suck”), which has no clear Indo-European etymology. Cognate with Persian مکیدن (mekidan, “to suck, absorb”), probably a loan word from Northwestern Iranian, and مزیدن (mazidan, “to taste”).
