- c. 1260s, Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī, translated by Reynold A. Nicholson, مثنوی معنوی [Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi], volume II, verse 862:
  گوش چون نافذ بود دیده شود
  ور نه قل در گوش پیچیده شود
  gōš čōn nāfiz buwad dīda šawad
  war na qul dar gōš pēčīda šawad
  When the ear is penetrating, it becomes an eye;
  otherwise,the word (of God) becomes entangled in the ear (and does not reach the heart).
