Etymology

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (PWN /⁠pad⁠/, to, at, in, on) + Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (nyhʾn' /⁠nihān⁠/, concealment, secrecy). originally a contraction of elements equivalent to New Persian به (be, in) + نهان (nehân, hiding), i.e. "in hiding".
