پیمودن

From Middle Persian [script needed] (ptmwtn', ptmʾd- /⁠paymūdan, paymāy-⁠/, “to measure”), ultimately from *pati- and *maH- (“to measure”), the latter from Proto-Indo-Iranian *maH-, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (“to measure”). Cognate with Parthian 𐫛𐫅𐫖𐫀𐫅𐫗 (padmādan, “to measure”), Northern Kurdish pîvan (“to measure”), Sogdian [script needed] (ptmʾtʾy /⁠patmātē⁠/, “measured, frugal”). Akin to Old Armenian պատմեմ (patmem, “to tell, narrate”), an Iranian borrowing.

پیمودن • (peymudan) (present stem پیما (peymâ)) (transitive)

1. to measure

   طول آن را پیمود ― tul-e ân râ peymud ― he measured its length

2. to traverse; to travel through

   راهی طولانی را پیمودم ― râhi tulâni râ peymudam ― I traveled a long way

4. to quaff; to drink

     چو با حبیب نشینی و باده پیمایی
     به یاد دار محبان بادپیما را
