Inherited from Prakrit 𑀙𑀯𑀺 (chavi) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-lla-), from Sanskrit छवी (chavī́).[1] Cognate with Odia ଛଇଳା (chaiḷā), Punjabi ਛੈਲਾ / چھَیلا (chailā).
