Probably ultimately from Proto-Iranian *gaz- (“to bite”), borrowed from another Iranian language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *geğ(h)-, *geg(h) (“prick, sting”), which could also be the root of English key.[1].
Compare Classical Persian گزیدن (gazīdan, “to bite”), Zazaki gaz (“bite”). Also related to Pashto اغزی (“thorn”).
