From Akkadian 𒆜𒄷 (KASKAL^MUŠEN /⁠uršānu⁠/, “a kind of pigeon”), itself borrowed from Sumerian 𒆜𒄷 (KASKAL^MUŠEN /⁠irsaĝ⁠/, “pigeon”). Compare Jewish Babylonian Aramaic וַרְשָׁאנָא (waršānā), אוּרְשָׁנָא (uršānā), and Arabic وَرَشان (warašān).
