From the root ܙ ܘ ܓ related to joining, from Ancient Greek ζυγόν (zugón) or ζεῦγος (zeûgos), from Proto-Indo-European *yugóm (“yoke”). Compare Arabic زَوَاج (zawāj) and Hebrew זִוּוּג (ziwwûḡ).
