From the earlier uncontracted form ܚܸܢܟܿܵܐ (ḥenkā), still preserved in the plural form ܚܸܢܟܼܹܐ (ḥenḵē). Compare Arabic حَنَك (ḥanak) and Hebrew חֵךְ (ḥēḵ).
