Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac with the latter sense a semantic loan from Ancient Greek κανών (kanṓn). Doublet of ܩܵܢܘܿܢܵܐ (qānōnā, law), ܩܲܢܝܵܐ (qanyā, pen), and ܩܲܢܝܼܬܵܐ (qanītā, canal).
