Probably from Univerbation of ܡܘܿ (mō) +‎ ܡܸܢܕܝܼ (mindī), literally “What [is this] thing?”, compare the alternative form ܡܵܕܝܼ (mādī) formed with ܡܵܐ (mā) rather than ܡܘܿ (mō). Also often used in some dialects is ܡܸܢܕܝܼ ܡܵܐ (mā mindī, literally “What thing?”). Also proposed is Univerbation of ܡܘܿ (mō) +‎ ܐܵܕܝܼ (ādī), literally “What is this?”.^[1]
