Etymology
Possibly from the Middle Persian ancestor of Persian سندیان (sendiyân, “kind of oak”), potentially related to the term behind ܣܕܢܐ (saddānā, “anvil”), otherwise from the Semitic root ܣ ܢ ܕ related to firmness and staying up. Compare Arabic سِندِيَان (sindiyān), Akkadian 𒄑𒋛𒅔𒁕𒀀 (sindu, “a tree”).
