Uncertain. This pattern matches the Arabic and rarely Syriac diminutive pattern (Syriac which usually has a deletion of the /u/, but kept in ܥܘܼܙܲܝܠܵܐ (“young gazelle”), if not borrowed from Arabic). Some dialects pronounce this word with /f/ suggesting a borrowing, or alternatively, influence from Arabic قَطَفَ (qaṭafa). Still, this word is not found in Arabic and it is not certain why the diminutive structure is used for this meaning. Also found in Mandaic. The pattern is also found in the dialectal ܚܘܼܣܲܝܪܵܐ (ḥūsayrā, “dew”) and the plural word ܟܘܼܒܲܝܒܹ̈ܐ (kūbaybē). (This etymology is missing or incomplete.
