Inherited from Aramaic שׁוּחָא (šūḥā), from Akkadian 𒄑𒅇𒆪 (GIŠÙ.SUḪ5 /ašūḫu/), from Hurrian 𒀸𒌋𒄭 (AŠ.U.ḪI /ašoḫe/, “fir; mealtime (due to cooking fumes)”); compare also in Classical Mandaic ࡀࡔࡅࡇࡀ (/ʾašūḥā/), Hebrew אַשּׁוּחַ ('ashúakh) and Arabic شُوح (šūḥ).
