Inherited from Prakrit 𑀭𑀸𑀇 (rāi), variant of 𑀭𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺 (ratti), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀭𑀸𑀢𑀺 (*rāti), from Sanskrit रात्रि (rātri). Cognate to Sinhalese රෑ (rǣ).[1]
