Etymology

From earlier 𑤀𑤛𑤵𑤮𑤳 (ateḷu), perhaps from Prakrit *𑀲𑀁𑀢𑀻𑀞 (*saṃtīṭha), *𑀲𑀁𑀢𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (*saṃtiṭṭha), from Sanskrit *संतीर्थ (*saṃtīrtha, “level ford”), from सम्- (sam-) +‎ तीर्थ (tīrtha).^[1] The alternative popular etymology, from Persian (âb-tal, “water-hillock”), is now considered untenable.
