Etymology

Of unclear origin. Despite Vedic attestation, probably borrowed from an unknown substrate. The word structure resembling a compound of आशी (āśī, to rest on; blessing) and विष (viṣa, poison) is probably a folk-etymological adaptation from the original source. On the other hand, Charpentier does consider the word to be a Vedic compound of *आशी (*āśī, sharp) + विष (viṣa, poison), deriving the former component from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (sharp).
