Inherited from Old Marathi काळज (kāḷaj̈), from Sanskrit कालेय (kāleya, “liver”). Doublet of काळजी (kāḷjī). Cognate with Hindi कलेजा (kalejā). Compare Telugu కాలేయము (kālēyamu), కారిజము (kārijamu).
