From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ḍẓʰaHpáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰ-eh₁ (“to burn”). Compare Pali jhāpeti, Ashokan Prakrit 𑀛𑀸𑀧𑀬𑀺𑀢𑀯𑀺𑀬𑁂 (jhāpayitaviye, “ought to be burnt”, gerundive).
