Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀔𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀸 (khaṭṭā), from Sanskrit खट्वा (khaṭvā, “bedstead”), possibly from Dravidian (compare Tamil கட்டில் (kaṭṭil, “bedstead”), Malayalam കട്ടിൽ (kaṭṭil)). Cognate with Marathi खाट (khāṭ).
