Etymology

Of unclear origin.[1] Mayrhofer rejects an earlier theory deriving the word from an earlier unattested *ग-गण (*ga-gaṇa, filled with wandering troops (i.e. clouds in the sky)), a reduplicative formation from गम् (gam, to go), and proposes no alternative etymology.[2]
