Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘐𑘪𑘝 (gavata, “grass”), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀯𑀢𑁆𑀢 (gavatta, “fodder”), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀯𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*gavatta, “fodder”), from Sanskrit गो (go, “cow”) + अत्त (atta, “food”).
