Inherited from Old Hindi गांव (gāṃva), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀸𑀫 (gāma), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀕𑀸𑀫 (gāma), from Sanskrit ग्राम (grāma, “village”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *grā́mas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *grā́mas, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)gróm-os, from the root *h₂ger- (“to assemble, gather”). Distantly related to Polish gromada (“village organization”).
