Etymology

Inherited from Apabhramsa घुंट (ghuṃṭa), from Prakrit *घुंटइ, घुट्टइ (ghuṃṭaï, ghuṭṭaï, gulps), of Dravidian origin. Cognate with Punjabi ਘੁੱਟ (ghuṭṭa, sip, gulp), Gujarati ઘૂંટ (ghū̃ṭ), and Marathi घोट (ghoṭ).
