Etymology

Probably borrowed from the Dravidian word for "bark (of a tree)"; compare Tamil சொலி (coli, bark of a tree; the inner fibrous covering of bamboo), Malayalam തൊലി (toli, skin, peel, bark). However, the discrepancy between the "l" and the "ḍ" between the Dravidian and Indo-Aryan forms is difficult to explain.
