Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit *स्त्यैन्य (*styainya), vriddhi derivative of स्त्यान (styāna, coagulated), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stiHyaHnás, from Proto-Indo-European *stih₂-yeh₂nós (stiffened), from the root *steyh₂- (to stiffen).[1] Cognate with Bengali ছানা (chana).
