Etymology

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀟𑀩𑁆𑀩 (*ḍabba), *𑀟𑀸𑀯 (*ḍāva, box; hollow vessel); possibly ultimately of Dravidian origin.[1] Compare डिब्बा (ḍibbā, box), Marathi डाव (ḍāv, hollowed coconut), Bengali ডাব (ḍabo), Odia ଡାବ (ḍāba, raw coconut). Also compare Swahili dafu, an Indo-Aryan borrowing.
