Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀣𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀣 (*thuttha), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀣𑀼𑀣 (*thutha), ultimately from Munda (Compare Sanskrit तुण्ड (tuṇḍa, “beak”)). Cognate to Punjabi ਥੁਥਨੀ (thuthnī), Nepali थुतुनो (thutuno), Bengali থোঁতা (thō̃ta, “chin”), Marathi थोतरी (thotrī, “cheek”).
