From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dr̥štás (“visible”), from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥ḱ-tó-s, from *derḱ- (“to see”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬱𐬙𐬀 (dərəšta), Old English torht. The Sanskrit root is दृश् (dṛś).
