Etymology
Ultimately from Arabic نَقَّارَة (naqqāra), with the widespread change in Indo-Aryan descendants qq > g suggesting an intermediary. Cognate with Punjabi ਨਗਾਰਾ (nagārā), ਨਗਾੜਾ (nagāṛā), Nepali नगरा (nagarā), Odia ନାଗରା (nāgarā). Doublet of नक़्क़ारा (naqqārā).
