Etymology

From नि- (ni-, “not, without, in-”) +‎ ख़ालिस (xālis, “pure, unadulterated”), where the prefix नि- (ni-) is meaningless. See बेफ़ालतू (befāltū) and बेफ़ज़ूल (befazūl) for more such instances of a redundant negating prefix.
