Compound of न्हाण (nhāṇ, “bathing”) +‎ घर (ghar, “premises”). Also influenced by Old Marathi 𑘡𑘿𑘮𑘰𑘜𑘲 (nhāṇī, “bathroom”).

Usage notes

Historically the term referred to a space used solely for bathing. In the modern context, however, it has broadened to mean a bathroom that may contain a toilet as well.
