Uncertain. Perhaps inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀮𑀁𑀩 (pālaṃba, neck ornament; long), from Sanskrit प्रालम्ब (prālamba).

According to a folk etymology, a blend of पानी (pānī, water) +‎ आलम (ālam, world).[1]
