मडगाव

Marathi
Etymology
Borrowed from Konkani मडगांव (maḍgāuva) (see there for more) with the expected loss of the phonemic nasalisation in the second vowel.
More information
- If the term had instead been inherited from Sanskrit मठग्राम (maṭhagrāma) through Prakrit *𑀫𑀠𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀸𑀫 (*maḍhaggāma), the second consonant may have been spelled with ढ (ḍha) as in मढ बेट.
- For other placenames ending in गाव (gāv), compare गिरगाव (girgāv, “Girgaon”) and माझगाव (māj̈hgāv) in Mumbai, लोहगाव (lohgāv) in Pune and सोनेगाव (sonegāv) in Nagpur.
