Etymology
Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘭𑘲 (māsī), from Prakrit मच्छिआ (macchiā) (compare Apabhramsa मच्छी (macchī)), from Sanskrit मक्षिका (mákṣikā).[1] Cognate with Hindi मक्खी (makkhī, “housefly”).
