From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayš- (to blink, wink), from Proto-Indo-European *meyg⁽ʷ⁾ʰ- (to blink, cover (the eyes)). Cognate with Persian مژه (može, eyelash), Lithuanian miẽgas (sleep), Proto-Slavic *měžiti (to close one's eyes).
