Probably borrowed from Dravidian; compare Telugu మొట్టు (moṭṭu, to rap with the knuckles). Perhaps also related to मुण्ट् (muṇṭ, to crush, grind), मूट (mūṭa, a basket or bundle), and Tamil முடை (muṭai, to plait, braid)
