Etymology

Mayrhofer relates the root to मृच् (mṛc, to hurt, injure, annoy); on the other hand, he relates मृक्ष् (mṛkṣ), generally considered an alternative form, to a different root, मृज् (mṛj, to wipe, rub, cleanse).
