Inherited from Prakrit *लालिच्च (lālicca), from Sanskrit लालित्य (lālitya, “lust”), a vṛddhi derivative of ललित (lalita, “sported, desired”), from the root लल् (lal, “to sport, play”). Related to लड़ना (laṛnā, “to fight”).
