Inherited from Old Marathi वाळू (vāḷū), from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀼𑀆 (vāluā), from Sanskrit वालुका (vālukā). Cognate with Hindi बालू (bālū), Odia ବାଲି (bāli). False cognate of Marathi वाळणे (vāḷṇe, “to dry”).
