Etymology

Inherited from Old Marathi वाळू (vāḷū), from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀼𑀆 (vāluā), from Sanskrit वालुका (vālukā). Cognate with Hindi बालू (bālū), Odia ବାଲି (bāli). False cognate of Marathi वाळणे (vāḷṇe, to dry).
