Etymology
Merger of Prakrit 𑀲𑀼𑀡𑁆𑀳𑀸 f (suṇhā, “daughter-in-law”) and 𑀲𑀽𑀡𑀼 f (sūṇu, “daughter”) with influence from बहू (bahū). Eclipsed by बहू (bahū) and बेटी (beṭī). Cognate with Konkani सून (sūn) and Marathi सून (sūn), and distantly with Old English snoru, Portuguese nora, Ancient Greek νῠός (nŭós), Albanian nuse, and Russian сноха́ (snoxá), all meaning "daughter-in-law".
