    Inherited from Middle Bengali মুতি (muti), from Prakrit 𑀫𑁴𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺𑀅 (mŏttia) from Sanskrit मौक्तिक (mauktika). Chatterji suggests influence from Hindustani मोती / موتی (motī), while Turner proposes a direct borrowing.[1][2]
