Etymology
Inherited from Middle Bengali লেঁজ (lẽj), from earlier লাঁজ (lãj) with nasal coloring increasing vowel height, from Prakrit 𑀮𑀁𑀚 (laṃja), from Sanskrit लञ्ज (lañja, “tail”), of substrate origin, cognate with Odia ଲାଞ୍ଜ (lāñja). Doublet of লাঙ্গুল (laṅgul), লাঙ্গুর (laṅgur), and লেঙ্গুড় (leṅguṛ), and possibly লেওড়া (leōṛa).
