ਆਪਾਂ

Punjabi

Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀸 (appā), from Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātmán, soul, spirit; self). Compare Marathi आपण (āpaṇ). Doublet of ਆਪ (āpa).

Pronunciation

Pronoun

ਆਪਾਂ • (āpā̃) (Shahmukhi spelling آپاں)

  1. (dialectal) we: inclusive first-person plural personal pronoun

Usage notes

Used in some Punjabi dialects, mainly in India, but also in some dialects of Pakistan - which indicates an inclusive plural personal pronoun, i.e. 'we'. In standard Punjabi, the common term is ਅਸੀਂ (asī̃) / اَسِیں (asīṉ), which does not indicate inclusivity or exclusivity.
