ਆਪਾਂ
Punjabi
Etymology
Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀸 (appā), from Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātmán, “soul, spirit; self”). Compare Marathi आपण (āpaṇ). Doublet of ਆਪ (āpa).
Pronunciation
- (Standard Punjabi) IPA(key): /äː.pä̃ː/
- Rhymes: -ä̃ː
- Hyphenation: ਆ‧ਪਾਂ
Pronoun
ਆਪਾਂ • (āpā̃) (Shahmukhi spelling آپاں)
- (dialectal) we: inclusive first-person plural personal pronoun
Usage notes
Used in some Punjabi dialects, mainly in India, but also in some dialects of Pakistan - which indicates an inclusive plural personal pronoun, i.e. 'we'. In standard Punjabi, the common term is ਅਸੀਂ (asī̃) / اَسِیں (asīṉ), which does not indicate inclusivity or exclusivity.
