Etymology
From ਚਾਹਣਾ (cāhṇā, “to want”), ਚਾਹੁਣਾ (cāhuṇā, “to want”). Both a passive participle (in eastern Punjabi dialects) and an imperfective participle (in western Punjabi dialects) of ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ (cāhundā, “[he] wants”). The passive participle in western Punjabi dialects is usually nasalized as ਚਾਹੀਂਦਾ (cāhīndā). Cognate to Hindi चाहिए (cāhie).
