Unclear. An earlier variant, ਕੂੰ (kūṃ)/کوں (koṉ), which only marks the dative case for otherwise accusative-marked nouns, is attested six times in the parts of the Guru Granth Sahib which are written in Old Punjabi, and could be related to Hindi को (ko).

1. marks the dative case: to

   ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਿਓ। ― mere bharā nū̃ kujh pāṇī dio. ― Give my brother some water.

   ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ? ― tuhānū̃ kī hoiā? ― What happened to you?

2. marks the accusative case

   ਉਸਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿਆ ― usane mere kutte nū̃ māriā ― He hit my dog!

3. movement towards or until a point: to, -wards

   ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ― ghar nū̃ jā rihā hā̃ ― I'm going home(wards)
